Chennai: Burglars dragged out of locked house, beaten up
Chennai: Two burglars trapped inside a house were beaten up by residents, on Tuesday.
According to police sources, auditor Srinivasan, a resident of Neelamangalam near Padappai, had gone to Delhi with his family a few days ago. “He had intimated about his travel to neighbours and asked them to keep an eye on his house,” the police said.
On Tuesday morning, some neighbours heard footsteps inside Srinivasan’s house and alerted others. “Neighbours gathered near the house and locked the door before informing Manimangalam police. The police arrived at the spot and pacified the crowd. Fearing floggings, both the burglars locked the door from inside,” the police added.
The police also said that burglars refused to open the door until the police promised protection from the angry mob.
“Upon opening the door, the police tried to protect the burglars and asked the neighbours to stop attacking,” police added.
However, the video surfaced on social media showed that despite police request, neighbours were seen attacking the burglars with sticks and cricket bats. Police brought them to the police station and interrogated them.
The two were identified as Ramesh (40) of Semmancheri and Anand (35) of Sholinganallur. “Both of them are history-sheeters and their modus operandi is entering the houses with fake keys without breaking the door,” the police said.
Ramesh and Anand were remanded to judicial custody.
