Hyderabad: Special teams to check rail caterers

Food safety officers from the medical department are conducting checks on quality and imposing fines against erring licensees.

Hyderabad: The South Central Railway said that special teams had been working to control caterers who charge exorbitant prices for food, and the unhygienic conditions.

Responding to a news report, ‘Caterers fleecing railway passengers’ published in these columns, SCR chief public relations officer M. Umashankar Kumar said the railway was creating awareness among passengers through display boards regarding the menu and tariff.

“Food safety officers from the medical department are conducting checks on quality and imposing fines against erring licensees. We conducted 46 raids in 2016 and imposed Rs 1.41 lakh towards penalties. Based on complaints, we have imposed Rs 22.47 lakh in penalties in 2016-17,” he said.
