Hyderabad infanticide: Police files case

ICDS officials filed a complaint with the police after a six-day old girl died in suspicious circumstances.

Hyderabad: Nalgonda police registered a suspicious death case regarding an alleged infanticide that took place in Devarakonda on Friday.

ICDS officials filed a complaint with the police after a six-day old girl died in suspicious circumstances. The child’s body was exhumed, an autopsy was conducted and samples were sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory.

The girl, who is the fourth child and third daughter of her parents, Madavath Sharada and Mangtha, hailing from Polyanayak tanda, was born six days ago. But on Friday her parents took her to child specialist Dr Babu in Devarakonda. He checked the child and finding her weak prescribed vitamins and glucose supplements. Around an hour later she died. Officials from Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS) said the doctor stated that she was healthy but weak. But the parents said that she started vomiting, had loose motions and died in two hours.

“There are many facts which raise suspicions. When the baby was not well they took her to a doctor, but when she suddenly became serious she was not given medical assistance,” Devarakonda ICDS project officer Bhukya Sakkubai said.

“Forensic experts conducted a spot autopsy and viscera samples were sent for forensic analysis. We are awaiting the report to establish the cause of death,” Chandampeta SI R. Satish Kumar said.
