Doctor crunch hits Secunderabad Cantonment Board hospital

As the SCB is short of doctors and paramedical staff, the state has to pitch in staff to operate the hospital in its full capacity.

HYDERABAD: Lack of clarity between the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) and the Telangana government over doctors and paramedical staff for the Cantonment General Hospital in Bollarum is likely to delay the full restoration of medical services in the hospital. According to senior officials from the Telangana health department, they have no clue whether the SCB would allocate its medical staff. Though the SCB has decided to hand over the hospital to the state government for the benefit of people, there was no mention of sharing of staff.

As the SCB is short of doctors and paramedical staff, the state government has to pitch in with surgeons, specialists, nurses, physiotherapists and technical staff to run the hospital to its full capacity.

However, the state health department does not have additional medical staff to spare for the SCB hospital.

Vakati Karuna, commissioner, health and family welfare, said that they have to assess the requirement before deputing the staff.

The department may ask doctors and paramedical staff working in maternity hospitals in King Koti, Nampally, Osmania and Gandhi hospitals to offer their services to the SCB hospital.

With cantonment hospital being a 30-bedded facility, about seven doctors, including gynaecologists, paediatricians and surgeons need to work in shifts. Also, eight senior nurses have to be deputed to take care of patients.

Ward member J. Lokanatham, under whose jurisdiction the hospital falls, stated that a delegation will meet Vakati Karuna to expedite the formalities.
