Lorry driver, relative held for ₹27.5 lakh theft
NELLORE: In a swift action, Nellore district police recovered on Tuesday ₹27.50 lakh from a lorry driver and his brother-in-law. The two had conspired to rob the cash from their truck parked before a dhaba at Kondurusatram on National Highway No. 16 in Manubolu mandal of SPSR Nellore district on September 24, 2022.
According to Nellore district superintendent of police Ch. Vijaya Rao, a Bengaluru-based firm had sent a truckload of white pigs to Nagaland 10 days ago with two drivers and three assistants to take care of the pigs.
The firm’s manager R. Sridhar collected ₹28 lakh after delivering the pigs to the buyer. Sridhar handed over the cash to the two drivers – S. Senthil Kumar and K. Krishnan – for depositing at the firm. He then took a flight to Bengaluru.
Seeing the high volume of cash, Krishnan got greedy. He asked his relative M. Velu from his native Sankarapuram village of Theni district in Tamil Nadu to reach Kondurusatram in Manubolu mandal. Once the truck reached there on the night of September 24, Krishnan parked the vehicle at a dhaba for having food. He and Velu then took away the cash and disappeared from the scene.
Soon, shocked by the absence of Krishnan and cash, Senthil and others alerted Manubolu police.
Venkatachalam circle inspector G. Gangadhar Rao immediately formed teams headed by sub-inspectors of Manubolu and Venkatachalam and started vehicular checks at the toll plazas on the national highway.
One of the teams spotted Krishnan and Velu near Golgamudi crossroad close to Venkatachalam and seized ₹27.50 lakh from their possession on Tuesday.
SP Vijaya Rao presented cash rewards to the police team. The SP appreciated area DSP Y. Harinath Reddy and inspector Gangadhar for nabbing the accused and recovering 99 percent of the cash.
