Hyderabad cops fail to act on drunkman for attack, threat

HYDERABAD: A resident of Vijayanagar Colony under Humayunnagar police station limits was allegedly harassed by a drunk neighbour and threatened with a ‘sword’ for refusing to give money to the neighbour to buy alcohol.

Fearing a threat to his life, he immediately approached the police, only to a poor response. Police, who arrived at the scene, told the victim that they could not take action against the neighbour as he was drunk and that it was against their guidelines.

As a result of the alleged lax action, the victim spent a fearful night, claiming that the neighbour created a nuisance and threw his belongings out of his room.

After repeated attempts to reach the police over the phone did not yield a result, he went to the police station, where he was allegedly ill-treated by the cops. After much persuasion, the police admitted his complaint, only to send him away with an assurance that they could take action only after inquiry.

The victim pleaded with the police for action as the neighbour might attack again, but in vain. He alleged that the police turned up twice but did not arrest the neighbour on the excuse that he was drunk.

“They did not even give a receipt of the complaint. How can I be assured of any action and more importantly, my safety?” the victim questioned.

A police official said that they would verify the victim’s claims and initiate action against the drunk person, as per the law.
