Chennai police seize banned gutka, tobacco products; 7 held

The contraband weighing d around 8.35-kilo worth Rs 6 lakh was seized from them, said police.

Chennai: In two different cases, city police detected and seized the supply of banned gutka and tobacco products here on Monday.

Based on a tip-off, Tondiarpet police arrested seven men identified as R. Ravichandran (52), G. Sathya (28), T. Selvaraj (36), V. Suresh (34), C. Rajkumar (32), M. Kumar (46) and V. Velu (47) near the railway track behind roundtana bustop in Tondiarpet on early hours of Monday.

The contraband weighing d around 8.35-kilo worth Rs 6 lakh was seized from them, said police. An investigation also revealed that the seven men smuggled the ganja products from Andhra Pradesh and had planned to sell them to colleges in Chennai.

Koyambedu police got information that gutka products are being delivered to parcel agencies around Koyambedu and from there distribution to Chennai is going on Koyambedu police raided the private parcel agency and seized two mini lorries of banned gutka products worth '11 lakh and arrested the peddlers Vijayakumar of Tambaram, Anwar of Virudhachalam and Munna Ram of Rajasthan, The accused were remanded in judicial custody in both the cases and a total of Rs 17 lakh worth gutka products were seized from them.
