BENGALURU: In a grisly incident, a mother threw her seven-year-old daughter from a building twice to ensure that she is dead! The only fault of the child was that she was speech impaired and mentally unstable.
The accused mother, Swathi (36), first threw her daughter Ishika alias Shreya from the third floor of the building, but when she found that the child was still alive, she climbed down, took her to the third floor and threw her again. The incident happened at around 3 pm on Sunday in Jaraganahalli in JP Nagar.
While nobody witnessed Shreya falling for the first time, Swathi’s neighbors claimed that they have seen Swathi taking her daughter and throwing her from the third floor of her building. “We thought she was taking her home which was on the third floor as she was bleeding. She instead threw her from atop the building,” the eyewitnesses recounted the horror.
Swathi then went inside her house and changed clothes and came down when the neighbors caught her, tied her to a pole and beat her black and blue before handing her over to the Puttenahalli police. During the time of incident Shreya was naked and some neighbours covered her using a piece of cloth.
According to police, Swathi had a love marriage with one Kanchan Sarkar, a senior business analyst at a reputed MNC, in 2005.
The couple hailed from West Bengal and had eloped and came to Bengaluru. Everything was fine between them till Shreya was born. They realised that she couldn’t speak properly and was mentally unstable. Though Sarkar treated his daughter well, Swathi used to frequently beat her and even fought with Sarkar over petty issues.
Not able to bear his wife’s behaviour, Sarkar had rented a house for himself in Indiranagar and moved there seven months ago, leaving his wife and daughter. He, however, visited his wife and paid money for the expenses.
It is learnt that Swathi went into severe depression after her husband left her and her anger towards their daughter increased. She used to blame her for the separation.
On Sunday noon, Swathi again picked a fight with Shreya while giving her a bath. In a fit of anger she threw her from the building. When she found her alive, fearing she might inform the neighbours, she took her atop the building and threw her again, making it appear as an accidental fall.
Puttenahalli police have arrested Swathi and are interrogating her. A police source said that she would be sent to Nimhans for treatment as she was showing signs of depression.
