Bengaluru: A POCSO rape attempt accused and two policemen got injured when the three fell off a Cheetah bike while the accused tried to escape by jumping from the moving bike on Friday afternoon.
The incident happened when the accused, identified as Raghavendra, 21, a resident of Thorepalya was arrested and was being brought to the Magadi town police station by a constable and a home guard, a senior police officer stated.
According to the police, they received information that Raghavendra, who was booked around an year ago, had come to his house in Thorepalaya recently. He had allegedly tried to rape a five year old girl, but was caught and beaten up by the public, and later handed over to the police. After he secured bail, he soon absconded and the police had issued a warrant against him.
Police constable Hemanth and home guard Harish on their Cheetah bike went to Thorepalaya and nabbed Raghavendra. As the cops could not find any auto, they decided to bring the accused to police station by bike. The accused was then made to sit in between the rider and the pillion rider home guard.
When the bike reached Sandurayanahalli, Raghavendra allegedly tried to jump off the bike, which led to three of them falling and sustaining minor injuries, the officer said. However, the cops thwarted Raghavendra’s attempts to escape and brought him to the police station, the officer said.
The senior police officer at the Magadi town police station had gone to attend a meeting at the SP’s office in Ramanagara in his jeep and it was the only four-wheeler at the police station, and hence the constables had to use a bike to bring the accused, said a source from the station.
As there are no standby vehicles, sometimes we have to ‘adjust’ with whatever resources we have and bring the accused to the station, the source added.
Superintendent of Police, Ramanagara, Dr Chandragupta said though he knew about the arrest of the POCSO accused, he was not aware of his men falling off the bike.
