Kerala: Photographer abuses woman offering roles

Cops act after US-based victim's complaint.

KOCHI: The city police has arrested a 33-year-old photographer with connections in Malayalam film industry for sexually assaulting a 24-year-old US-based woman doctor and swindling nearly Rs 33 lakh from her promising her role in films. The accused, identified as Jinson Lonappan, belongs to Kodungalloor. The cops nabbed him after a case was registered against him on a complaint by the woman. According to cops the accused met the woman while working as a camera assistant for a film a year ago. He became friendly with her and promised that he would help her in getting roles in films as an actor.

The accused also took nude photographs of the complainant on the guise of showing them to potential directors and producers at a flat in Vytilla. The accused also had shown photographs of him with various actors to gain her trust. Jinson also promised to make the woman famous by various exorcism techniques. Telling her that she resembled his old girlfriend, who had died, the gained her trust and sexually abused her several times. The accused convinced her that he is having supernatural powers by telling information about the woman gained from her maid.

The woman found out about the fraud when the accused had reportedly left his phone in the house of the woman and she realised that he was a married person.
The accused issued a cheque to the woman when she demanded her money back but it bounced. As he threatened her she was forced to lodge a complaint, cops said. Police laid a trap and persuaded the complainant to ring up the accused and tell him reach Kathrkadavu from where he was arrested by a team led by Ernakulam North station house officer Vibin Das. Jinson had worked in Malayalam and Tamil films. The woman, whose parents are settled in US, was in Kerala with the hope of making a career in films. She had acted in minor roles in few Tamil films. Jinson is charged under sections 376, 406 and 420 of the IPC. He was sent to judicial custody.
