ANANTAPUR: A tense situation prevailed at Proddatur town in YSR district on Monday after the civic authorities removed some structures of a dargah in the course of road widening process.
Activists of all parties gathered at the spot and blamed the officials for not giving prior information to the dargah and bringing the JCB all of a sudden to demolish the structure.
As the situation got tense, additional police forces were rushed to the spot and cops detained activists of the YSRC and TD to continue with the widening process.
Two municipal councillors of Proddatur municipality tried to resist the demolition of the dargah structure located adjacent to the main road.
Proddatur-based TD leader Praveen Reddy and Kothapalli sarpanch Sivachandra Reddy were arrested when they staged a protest at the spot.
With the situation remaining tense, police shifted the activists to different police stations. The YSRC activists tried to stop the arrest of their leaders when they were shifted in a bus, at Mydukur road. Later the police shifted them to the rural police station.
The authorities demolished the encroachment site to clear the road widening process after dispersing the mob.
