Kancheepuram: Man stabs niece for refusing to marry him

In a fit of rage at being spurned, Muthu whipped out a knife he had hidden in his hip pocket and tried to stab her on the neck.

Kancheepuram: A young trainee nurse has been admitted in the government hospital here Saturday morning with multiple cut wounds inflicted by her maternal uncle because she rejected his marriage proposal. After attacking her, the man consumed poison and is being treated in the ICU at the same hospital, police said.

"There are police guards at his ICU ward, keeping watch over him. He will be arrested after discharge and charged with attempt to murder", said DSP Balasubramanian.

Jayanti, 20, hails from Echur village near Kancheepuram and after completing her training in nursing, has been working as a trainee nurse at a private hospital here. Her maternal uncle R Muthu, 27, works as a air-conditioning mechanic at a private company in Vandalur. He was harassing her to marry him but she spurned him.

Muthu came to his niece's place of work at about 11 in the morning and after offering her a gift of an expensive make-up kit, pleaded once again that she should marry him. Jayanthi rebuked him for disturbing her at work and also refused to take his gift. She told him to leave her alone.

In a fit of rage at being spurned, Muthu whipped out a knife he had hidden in his hip pocket and tried to stab her on the neck. Jayanti quickly ducked and managed to save her neck from being slashed, but the attacker could inflict cut wounds on a side of the neck and also her arm. Her cries of alarm and pain brought the others in the hospital rushing to her rescue. They removed her to the government GH.

Another group gave Muthu a chase, but the man ran up to the open terrace of a house two streets away and consumed poison he had brought with him. The public rushed him to the same government hospital, where the doctors admitted him in the ICU and told relatives his health status would be known only after 48 hours. Jayanti is said to be out of danger.
