Chennai: 2 students held for vehicle theft attempt

The arrested were identified as Gurjit Singh, a second year mechanical engineering student.

Chennai: The Kancheepuram Police, on Monday, arrested two private university students in connection with a failed attempt to steal a techie's two-wheeler parked in their apartment complex. Their role was established by surveillance cameras which captured their act of breaking into the glove cabinet of the techie’s two-wheeler and abandoning the attempt on the sight of another vehicle pulling into the parking lot of their apartment complex.

The arrested were identified as Gurjit Singh, a second year mechanical engineering student and his batch and roommate Ankit Parmar, a B.com student, both natives of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. They were studying as day scholars in a private university in Padur near Kelambakkam in neighbouring Kancheepuram district. They were staying in twin-sharing accommodation in Oho Tree Apartments, Kazhipattur, Old Mahabalipuram Road. The techie, S. Anand, also a resident of the same apartment, noticed the break-in attempt on Monday morning in his Scooty’s compartment under the seat. On questioning the security personnel, he found out that no strangers visited the complex from the time he parked his vehicle.

A perusal of the security camera footage from the parking lot showcased two males clad in shorts and T-shirts at around 1 am. As their 10-minute hunt for a bunch of spare keys did not materialise, the duo used some rods to break open the storage compartment. While they were at it for about a few minutes, the approaching lights of another vehicle pulling into the parking lot prompted them to ditch their attempt. A perusal of the corridor cameras helped fix their identity, as they were the only ones to come out and go into their flat at the time of the incident.

“We confronted them with the footage and they confessed to have tried to steal the parked vehicle. With the tools and bunch of keys in their possession, we have reasons to believe that they were involved in similar offences. However, we are trying to establish the same through our investigations”, a senior police official told Deccan Chronicle. Kelambakkam Police arrested the duo based on a formal complaint from Anand.
