Early Jab Kills Infant, Negligence Case Filed

Hyderabad: Asifnagar police on Tuesday registered a case of negligence after a 40-day-old infant died reportedly after she was administered a vaccination weeks before it was due.

According to the police, P. Renuka, 29, gave birth to a baby girl on November 22 and was discharged the next day.

On December 23, anganwadi workers came to their house at Shamsundernagar and told Renuka and her husband Potharaju Kothala Rao that their daughter needed to be vaccinated and asked them to go to the area health centre.

At the anganwadi health centre on Monday at 12.30 pm, a nurse administered the infant the vaccine.

Around 2 pm, the infant fell unconscious and was rushed to Niloufer hospital where the doctors declared her dead. Doctors said the vaccination was supposed to be given after 45 days of birth, and had been administered earlier due to which the baby might have died.

Police registered a case of death due to negligence under IPC Section 304 (a) and and are trying to identify the nurse who gave the vaccine.
