Chennai: Head constable arrested for extorting money
Chennai: In a shoddy affair, a head constable in the city and a sex worker with whom he had teamed up to extort money have been arrested.
The incident occurred when the police checked the phone records of the woman and found regular calls to a police head constable identified as Parthiban from the CMBT police station.
On Sunday night, the police control room received a distress call from a woman who claimed to have received receive threat calls from a man. Acting immediately the police rushed to the spot to find that the woman had solicited a man, later identified as Vishwanathan, a cab driver from Aminjikarai to her house in Choolaimedu from Anna Arch. A policeman from the CMBT police station had conducted a raid and threatened the man to pay a bribe or be arrested for prostitution, she told the police.
Vishwanathan, fearing the constable paid him Rs 1300 and fled. However, suspecting foul play, he had contacted the woman and threatened her for staging such a drama later in the night. In an attempt to save herself, the woman called the control room. The police then swooped down on Vishwanathan, who narrated his version of the incident.
It is then that the police knew of the involvement of the policeman who had conducted several such ‘raids’ and extorted money from the customers. “When we checked her phone records, we found that the woman and the police head constable Parthiban have been working together for a while,” a police source said. Based on the complaint by Viswanathan, the Aminjikarai police have registered a case and both the woman and Parthiban. They have been detained and further investigations are on, police sources said.
