8.6-year rigorous imprisonment for 9 red sanders smugglers

A fine of Rs 3 lakh was also imposed by the Principal Assistant and Sessions Court of Chittoor on Monday.

TIRUPATI: Nine red sanders smugglers, who have been facing charges in smuggling cases registered in 2016-17 at Chittoor police station, have been sentenced to 8.6-year rigorous imprisonment.

A fine of Rs 3 lakh was also imposed by the Principal Assistant and Sessions Court of Chittoor on Monday.

According to the Chittoor police spokesperson, in connection with the case registered under Cr.No.70/2016 the court has sentenced the five accused to rigorous imprisonment. The five accused include S. Bala Murugan, 35, P. Veera Mahamani, 35, P. Shankar, 40, S. Mohammed Rafi, 38 and M. Madan, 49, hailing from various parts of Tamil Nadu. They were nabbed by the local police in connection with red sanders smuggling in 2016.

Similarly, in another case of red sanders smuggling, registered under Cr. No. 84/2017, four other accused, R. Murugesan, 48, C .Siva Kumar, 34, M. Lakshman, 39, and S. Ramesh, 24, all hailing from Tamil Nadu, were also sentenced with the same punishment along with a fine.
