Chennai: Imam held for misbehaving with girl
Chennai: A 40-year-old Imam of a mosque in Perungalatur was arrested by police for allegedly misbehaving with a 10-year-old girl attending his Quran classes. The arrested was identified as Ahamed Sultan, of Gundumedu mosque.
The police action was result of a complaint at the all-women police station in Tambaram.
The victim, a class V student of a private school, had been attending the 6 am Quran class of Imam Sultan at the mosque along with a few other children.
“He used to ask her to stay back saying she has to work harder because she was not good at learning.
However, the girl told her parents that Imam was getting too close with her by touching her private parts and also by trying to kiss her,” the police said.
When the parents confronted the Imam he said that the girl was telling lies because she does not want to attend the Quran classes.
However the parents decided to approach the police and lodged the complaint at all women police station. The police arrested the Imam on Tuesday.
“He has been arrested under sections of the protection of children from sexual offences (Pocso) Act. He was remanded to custody,” police said.
