Cop Who Probed Vet's Gangrape, Encounter of Four Resigns

HYDERABAD: Former Shadnagar ACP Vasam Surender, the investigation officer in the cases of gangrape and murder of a veterinarian in November 2019 and the alleged encounter of four suspects, submitted voluntary resignation from service.

While the resignation is yet to be accepted, officials said it is under process. He currently works in the Cyberabad commissionerate.

In the alleged encounter, Surender led the police party that was escorting the accused through the Chatanpally underpass, where the victim’s charred body was found.

Police had then said that at the time of crime scene reconstruction and recovery of her articles, the accused snatched weapons of the escort party and opened fire at the police. In retaliatory fire, the police killed all the four accused.

He was also the first IO in the case related to the death of the four accused, till the state government appointed another senior officer, J. Surender Reddy, then additional DCP of Rachakonda.

Subsequently, he was extensively grilled by the Justice V. Sirpurkar commission appointed by the Supreme Court. The commission concluded that the police party escorting the accused did not follow the procedures and also recommended the registration of a case against them for prosecution. The matter is before the Telangana High Court currently.
