Hyderabad: Man held for blackmailing

During January 2018, Sarkar had sent a friend request to the city-based woman on Facebook.

Hyderabad: A 32-year-old man from Mumbai, who extorted Rs 12 lakh from a city-based woman, was held by the Cyberabad cyber crime police on Monday after the woman lodged a complaint. The accused, Mohammed Salman Nawaz Sarkar, used to befriend women and collect private pictures for extorting money, said the police.

During January 2018, Sarkar had sent a friend request to the city-based woman on Facebook. He introduced himself as a businessman hailing from Mumbai living in Hyderabad. They continued to chat on Facebook and then on WhatsApp, which subsequently led to the video chats between the duo.

“A few months later, Sarkar asked the woman to give some money for his medical expenses and promised to clear the debt. She believed him and deposited the money into the bank accounts provided by Sarkar, which included his friends' accounts. When she stopped giving money, he threatened to share her private pictures on social media platforms and extorted a total of Rs 12.96 lakh,” said the Cyberabad police.
