Chennai: Youth murdered over enmity in bike racing

Chennai: Bad blood between two gangs over bike racing in their neighbourhood led to a murder in Maduravoyal on Thursday. The deceased was identified as K. Sankar, 23-year-old history-sheeter and a resident of Gangai Amman Nagar here.

On Thursday night, around 9.15 pm, Sankar was talking with his friend near the Lakshmi Nagar-MGR Nagar junction when they were rounded up by a five-member gang. The gang rained blows on Sankar with deadly weapons and fled the scene.

The grievously injured Sankar was moved to the Government Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Maduravoyal police formed special teams to trace the suspects in the murder.

Investigations revealed that Sankar, who is involved in several criminal cases in the neighbourhood, was also into bike racing in the city outskirts.

“About six months ago, Sankar had a clash with a gang when they indulged in bike racing. We started probing that angle,” said a police officer.

Police zeroed in on the suspects and rounded up four of the suspects near the Chembarambakkam lake on Friday.

During enquiries, it was confirmed that the gang had murdered the rowdy over previous enmity during the bike races, police said. The accused- H Ashok (23), S Sharath (23), V Shanmugamurthy (23) and M Murali (23)- all from the same neighbourhood as the deceased were arrested. They were produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody. Hunt is on for another one of the suspects- Arun, police said.
