Madras HC imposes Rs 25,000 fine on Chennai corporation, PWD officials

The bench said the amount may be utilized by her parents for treatment and welfare of the victim girl.

Chennai: Imposing a cost of Rs 25,000 each on official of PWD, Chennai corporation, a Deputy Collector and another official for non-compliance of the High Court order, the Madras High court has directed them to pay the amount to the parents of 11-year-old hearing impaired girl, who was allegedly sexually assaulted by 17 persons multiple times over the past seven months in an apartment at Ayanavaram.

The Division Bench Comprising Justice M. Venugopal and Justice S. Vaidyanathan before which four different matters with regarding to report of compliance of its order came up for hearing, has imposed the cost on officials.

The bench said “It is very unfortunate to note that when the matters are posted by this Court for reporting compliance, the respondents are sleeping over the matter, in order to make them to wake up from the slumber, a sum of Rs 25,000 is imposed as ‘Costs’ on the officials who are responsible for not complying with the orders dated March 20, 2018 and other subsequent dates the concerned officials shall ensure that the said amount is paid to the parents of the recent sexual assault victim of Ayanavaram, Chennai within a period of one week from the date of receipt of a copy of this order. The bench said the amount may be utilized by her parents for treatment and welfare of the victim girl.
