Marriage row: Youth kills sibling, surrenders

He had an affair with local girl, 16-year-old Varshini Priya, for the past two years.

COIMBATORE: A daily wage labourer who was on the run after assaulting his brother to death following a quarrel over the latter opting for an inter-caste marriage with a girl near Mettupalayam, surrendered to police on Wednesday.

According to police, Kanaga Raj (22), was a daily wage load man, working in a potato godown in Mettuplayam. He had an affair with local girl, 16-year-old Varshini Priya, for the past two years. The girl belonged to another caste.

Kanaga Raj's elder brother, Vinodh, had warned his brother several times and denied permission for the marriage. But, despite his brother's opposition, Kanaga Raj left home and got married to the girl recently. The couple was living separately near Srirangarayan Odai in the same area.

On Tuesday evening, Vinodh went to the house of Kanaga Raj and picked a quarrel with his brother. He asked him to leave the girl and return home.

Following a heated quarrel, Vinodh hacked his brother with a sickle in which Kanaga Raj died on the spot. Varshini Priya also suffered serious injuries as she attempted to rescue her husband from the attack, and is under treatment in the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
