Plus-2 students steal for tuition fee, held
Chennai: Five persons, including 3 plus-2 students and an engineering student, were arrested by the police on Thursday for allegedly stealing a smart phone and a wallet with Rs 8,000 from a house in Adambakkam on Wednesday night. The arrested minors were sent to a juvenile home while Raghupathi, 19, of Adambakkam, an engineering student and Ramesh, 19, working in a call taxi firm, were remanded to judicial custody.
One of the minor boys had allegedly stolen the valuables from the house of Ramesh, a resident of West Karikalan Street, after seeking water to drink, late on Wednesday evening. Based on a complaint from Ramesh, the police picked up the boy, who used to visit the house of Ramesh’s neighbour regularly. The boy denied his involvement but later confessed to the crime saying that he and his friends were planning to sell the smart phone for Rs 5,000 and then divide the money. The teenagers also told the police that they committed the crime so that they would have enough money to attend tuition classes for Plus-2 supplementary examination.
Police claimed that when the boy went inside Ramesh’s house to steal, three others waited outside and the four took the stolen items to the taxi office where the fifth suspect worked. The valuables were recovered from there, the police said.
