Kidney racket busted in Vizag

VISHAKHAPATNAM: A kidney racket was busted here on Wednesday after the donor filed a complaint with the police the previous day. The alleged illegal kidney transplantation took place on December 16 last. The victim was s Gorujalla Vinay, a resident of Vambay Colony, Madhuravada, Visakhapatnam.

Vinay said Kamaraju, a resident of the same Vambay Colony, went to his house and told him that anyone can earn big money by selling their kidney. Later, Kamaraju introduced the complainant to some persons to donate his kidney and promised a compensation of Rs 8.5 lakh.

On October 17, last year, Kamaraju took the complainant to Vijaya Diagnostic Centre, near the collector’s office here and got some medical tests conducted on him. After completing the medical formalities, the complainant got scared. He went to his aunt’s house in Hyderabad last November. After a few days, Kamaraju contacted him by phone and asked him to pay Rs 50,000 for medical tests and threatened to inform his parents that he was selling his kidney.

Following this, Vinay returned to Visakhapatnam on December 16. When he was at the Railway New Colony, near the Railway station, three persons -- Kamaraju, Elena, and Srinu – reached there and brought him to Tirumala Hospital, Pendurthi, in an auto rickshaw.

On the intervening night of December 16/17, Vinay was operated on and his kidney removed by the doctors of Tirumala Hospital. On December 24, Vinay reached home by taxi.

Later, the complainant’s mother informed the victim that, when Vinay was at the hospital, Kamaraju and Srinu went to Vinay’s house and showed the mother bundles of Rs 5 lakh but gave her only Rs 2,5 lakh and then left the house with the remaining amount.

After one month, one Kondamma came to his house and removed his stitches.

Following these incidents, Vinay lodged a complaint with PM Palem police seeking action against the accused Kamaraju, Elena, Srinu and the doctors who illegally performed the surgery and removed his kidney.

The police registered an FIR and a case under various sections of Transplantation of Human Organs Act-1995 has been filed.
