Gang nabbed for stealing UPS batteries from ATMs

They detached the connections of the UPS batteries and decamped with 22 batteries.

Hyderabad: Close-circuit TVs helped Narayanaguda police bust a two-member gang involved in the theft of UPS batteries from ATM booths. Police arrested bike mechanic P. Srinivas, 19, and a 17-year-old autorickshaw driver and recovered 138 batteries worth around Rs 10 lakh from their possession.

DCP central zone Kamalsan Reddy said the two accused hailed from Kadapa. The two along with another person came to the SBH ATM at Himayath Nagar on March 15 in an autorickshaw and entered the ATM booth.

“They detached the connections of the UPS batteries and decamped with 22 batteries. Police checked the CCTV footage at the ATM and other junctions outside and identified the registration number of the autorickshaw and traced the vehicle and the culprits.

During investigation, the gang admitted to 12 similar offences in various parts of the city. As many as 138 batteries stolen from various ATM booths worth around Rs 10 lakh were recovered from them and the two were sent to judicial remand. One suspect is absconding.
