Kerala: Children's panel ex-head arrested
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested Kerala State Council for Child Welfare (KSCCW) former chairman Sunil C. Kurian and member Chempazhanthy Anil on charges of creating 868 bogus memberships. Sunil and Anil were produced before the additional chief judicial magistrate court here and remanded. The CB team headed by organised crimes wing inspector V. Anil summoned the two on to record their statements. Subsequently, their arrests were recorded.
CPM-turned Congress activist Mr Kurien and Congress member Mr Anil indulged in the alleged corruption while they were nominated members of KSCCW in 2012. They allegedly manipulated the minutes of a council meeting and inducted 868 bogus members. Sudheer, an employee who allegedly made the entries at their instance, was made an approver in the case. A forensic comparison of his handwriting with that of the minutes was also made.
The elections to the KSCCW administrative committee last year had witnessed clashes between Congress and CPM over it. The CB probe was initiated on the basis of a recommendation of a panel constituted by the government. Apart from this, it had found corruption in appointments and adoption. Enquiries on those allegations were also progressing. They had also faced a case in connection with alleged irregularities at Indian Red Cross Society, Kerala chapter. Mr Sunil was the former chairman of its Kerala chapter, and Mr Anil former managing committee member.
