Congress MLA M Vincent sent to one-day custody

The police was interrogating him till late on Tuesday night.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress MLA M Vincent was sent to police custody for 24-hours on Tuesday in connection with the rape case of a 51-year-old woman. A magistrate court at Neyyatinkara also rejected the Kovalam MLA’s bail application considering the strong objections of the investigation team. While the team sought five days custody of Vincent for further quizzing and evidence collection ,the court granted only one day custody.

The police was interrogating him till late on Tuesday night. Though the police was planning to take him to the places where he allegedly sexually assaulted the woman, the police will proceed with the plan only after reviewing security as a number of local people supporting Vincent and Congress workers may create problems. During the argument on the bail application, Vincent's lawyer said that the woman used to call Vincent several times and also produced call details records.

He also alleged political conspiracy behind the case. But the police strongly objected citing the details of calls made from Vincent's phone to the woman. The police also maintained that if Vincent was granted bail he may try to influence the witnesses and even threaten the victim. The police earlier stated in the remand report that Vincent sexually assaulted the woman on two occasions, on September 10 and November 11 last year.
