Two M-Tech students arrested for sending hoax threat e-mails to KIA

The first email was shot at around 10.40 am from a system in the computer lab of their college when the 2 were alone in class, says police.

Bengaluru: Two M-Tech students of a private college on Magadi Road have been arrested by the International Airport police for sending hoax threat e-mails to Kempegowda International Airport and attaching their professors’ pictures, claiming they were associates of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

They demanded that $10 million should be handed over to these associates, claiming they were the secretaries of the don’s unit in Bengaluru. They did this because their professors had granted them poor marks in their internal examinations.

The arrested have been identified as Raghavendra Shankaraiah, 26, a resident of Basaveshwaranagar and Hoysala Rajanna, 23, resident of Ullal, both pursuing their M.Tech first year, 2nd semester at the East West College on Magadi Road. According to the police, the threat emails were sent on two different occasions, one on March 22, and the other on May 6 from a newly-created email account - Shubhak1101@gmail.com.

The first email was shot at around 10.40 am from a system in the computer lab of their college when the two were alone in class, the police said.

The email stated “Its Dawood’s gang here. Give $10 million to any of the people shown in photos. They are secretary of Indian unit of Dawood’s world. If you don’t give, we will keep bomb in your airport…. Be careful this should happen before evening.” The photos that were in three attachments to the email were of their college professors - Chandanraj, Dhanraj and Prasannaraj.

Though the terminal manager intimated about the threat mail to the police, the police did their investigations and concluded that it was a hoax email. Later on May 6, the duo sent a second email at around 9.30 am from a xerox outlet near their college stating “Today we will hijack a flight and tomorrow we will keep bomb.” The terminal manager intimated the police again of the second email and they swung into action. The two students were picked up by the police on May 21 and were interrogated. They confessed that they have attached the photos of the professors to avenge them as they did not award the duo sufficient marks in their internal assessments, the police said. Raghavendra told the police that the professors were favouring girl students and giving them good assessment scores while the duo was neglected and given poor marks. “Enraged with this and in order to teach the professors a lesson, the duo planned and carried out the hoax plot to frame the professors,” a senior police officer said. The two have been booked under several sections under IPC and suppression of unlawful acts against Safety of Civil Aviation Act. The two have been arrested and sent to jail and further investigations are underway. police complaint. The duo have been booked for assault.
