Journo who was beaten is arrested in Chirala
Nellore: The Chirala police arrested freelance journalist Nagarjuna Reddy in a case under the SC/ ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and produced him before the magistrate in Chirala late on Friday night. He was remanded for 15 days.
The journalist had been assaulted in board daylight by Amanchi Srinivasa Rao, the brother of legislator Amanchi Krishna Mohan, at the busy Clock Tower Centre in Chirala on February 6.
The incident sparked angry protests from journalists’ associations who demanded stern action against Srinivasa Rao after a video clipping of the attack went viral in the social media.
Immediately after the incident, former councillor S. Shyam filed a case against Reddy under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atroci-ties) Act, alleging that Srinivasa Rao was abu-sed using his caste name.
The Press Council of India took suo motu cognisance of the attack and served notice to the Chief Secretary, the Vijayawada commissioner of police, the Prakasam superintendent of police and Mr Krishna Mohan directing them to submit a report on the incident.
A Press Council committee had reportedly ordered the police not to take any action against Nagarjuna Reddy till its next sitting.
