Coimbatore: A Village Administrative Officer (VAO) has been booked by the cops of All Women’s Police Station (AWPS) in Thudiyalur for attempting to murder his wife and calling her by her caste name.

Police said the complainant Punitha, aged 29 and a Dalit, married C Sivakumar, a caste Hindu VAO in Saravanampatty two years ago and they have a one-year-old girl child. They married against the wishes of her parents and the couple was residing at Srinivasa Nagar in Goundampalayam.

Sivakumar harassed his wife physically and mentally demanding her entire salary that she earned by working as a clerk in a public sector bank in Sivanandha Colony. As she refused to give him money, Sivakumar made it an issue and complained to her parents.

When a quarrel broke out between the couple, Punitha’s father had intervened and tried to compromise. However, Sivakumar got angry and abused his wife and father-in-law by calling them by their caste names.

He also attempted to murder her by strangulating; however she was rescued and rushed to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for treatment.

Based on a complaint by Punitha, the AWPS registered a case against Sivakumar and his mother Chitra under SC/ST Act and for attempt to murder. Further investigations are on.
