Chennai: Robbers decamp with 7 sovereigns, 2 kg silver items
Chennai: Police have launched a hunt for burglars, who allegedly sprayed chemicals on the occupants of a house near Ponneri in Thiruvallur district, 50 kms from the city and decamped with seven sovereigns of gold jewellery and two kilograms of silver articles.
Police sources also said that there remains some ambiguity in the complaint as preliminary investigations at the scene of crime do not reflect any forced entry.
Police said the incident was reported in BN Kandigai village near Ponneri.
The complainant, R Babu (37), a farmer stays with his family.
While his wife, Shankari (32) and two children were away at their hometown, Babu and his mother Amaravathi were present in the home.
According to the complaint, Babu was sleeping on a cot near the entrance while his mother slept inside the house. When they woke up on Sunday morning, the front door was found forced open and valuables inside the home were missing.
The man told Ponneri police they remained unconscious the whole night and suspect the intruders to have sprayed some chemical on them to rob them.
However, police sources said that there remains ambiguity about the complaint, as preliminary investigations have not suggested any signs of a forced entry into the house.
“The man claims that he had the lock repaired before complaining to us. No fingerprints were found in the scene either,” a police officer said. Ponneri police have registered a case and are investigating.
Less than a week ago, in another daring incident in Tiruvallur district, a robber snatched the gold chain of a school headmistress from the premises of panchayat union primary school near Mappedu.
