Impersonation in banking fraud hits new high

Man in trouble for Rs 59 lakh loan he didn't obtain.

Chennai: In a novel banking fraud, a man who was trying to get a Rs 1 lakh loan and was lured and paid eight months ago, is now asked to pay over Rs 51,000 as EMI for a loan of Rs 59.36 lakh, which somebody else had enjoyed.

The 37-year-old man, while looking for a loan of Rs 1 lakh, was allegedly lured by a fraudster, who used his personal details for making forged documents to get a loan of Rs 59.36 lakh for somebody else with the connivance of some employees of a nationalised bank.

The victim has now approached the Chennai police. According to the complainant, who earns Rs 16,000 a month as salary and a resident of Egmore here, the bank’s Saidapet branch is calling him and his wife over their mobile phones asking them to pay over Rs 2 lakh, which is four months EMI of Rs 51,048 each. The bank staff are allegedly threatening the couple that they would be arrested.

Sleuths of Chennai city central crime branch had acknowledged his complaint.

“Eight months back, I sought help from one Chandru for a loan of Rs 1 lakh to clear my debts. He took me to a real estate broker who introduced me to an auditor. After collecting my personal and company details they prepared duplicate identity card and forged the income tax statement, Form 16 and fake bank statement.

They also took me to the Poonamallee registrar office and made me to sign some papers.

In mid June I was asked to go to MRC Nagar branch of the bank and collect two demand drafts for Rs 50 lakh and Rs 9.36 lakh and hand over the same to the real estate broker. After this, I was paid Rs 1 lakh in cash by him and I was told there was no need for me repay it,” the man said in his complaint.

But his relief went for a toss when he started getting calls from the bank asking for repayment of loan.

Now he has sought the help of police to get out of the mess he is in. He believes that the loan had been taken in his name by creating forged documents of somebody else’s property.
