1 killed, 4 injured in shootout in Mumbai

Mumbai: A man was killed and four were injured in a broad daylight shootout in a busy residential area of Mumbai. According to the initial reports, the shootout took place at Chunabhatti at around 3.15 pm on Sunday. One of the injured is an eight-year-old girl. According to the police, a local goon was attacked by his rival gang.

At least 17-21 rounds were fired, the officials said. The incident occurred in the Azad Gali locality in Chunabhatti. The motive behind the shootout is rooted in the past rivalry between the deceased and the assailants. A senior police officer said that the deceased has been identified as Sumit alias Pappu Yerunkar.

According to the officials, more than three unidentified assailants fired several rounds before escaping from the scene of the crime. They specifically targeted Sumit Yerunkar (46), Roshan Lokhande (30) and Akash Khandagale (31). Yerunkar, who suffered two bullet injuries in the stomach and shoulder, died. Lokhande was shot in the right leg while Khandagale was shot in his right hand.

Unfortunately, two passersby were also injured in the firing including 54-year-old Mandar Patil and eight-year-old Trisha Sharma. All the injured, including Yerunkar, were rushed to civic-run Sion Hospital.

Deceased Yerunkar is a notorious figure in the locality with a history of extortion and attempted murder charges. He was recently released from Jail in September 2023 in connection with an attempt on the life of a construction professional Jinesh Jain in Chunabhatti area in 2016.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 6) Hemraj Singh Rajput said the firing was a result of a personal rivalry. “All the injured persons are stable. The accused have been identified. Nine teams have been formed to apprehend the absconding accused whose identity has been ascertained,” he said.
