Corporal punishment: Lecturers don't seem to learn
HYDERABAD: Corporate colleges say they are working to create awareness that corporal punishment is not allowed and must not be resorted to by teachers. Every year, workshops are organised to instruct lecturers about how they should handle difficult situations. Dean G. Naiduaiah of the Sri Chaitanya Education Institutions termed the incident of beating of students by a teacher in his college in SR Nagar as very unfortunate. He has been sacked, the dean said.
Mr Naiduaiah added that Chaitanya had mechanisms in place to ensure corporal punishment does not occur. “At the time of appointment, all lecturers are given clear instructions on this. Also, one day in a month is allotted for meetings in every college, where lecturers are told about corporal punishment and how to deal with student indiscipline. Teachers are told to inform principals who will get in touch with parents,” he said.
According to DGM Gopal Reddy from Narayana Institutions, corporal punishment cases have decreased considerably in the last few years, and strict action is taken if such cases are reported. “In the last academic year, two such cases were reported and we terminated the services of the lecturers. Ninety per cent of such cases involve new teachers,” Mr Reddy said. The workshops are conducted at the start of the academic year, during Dasara and Sankranti holidays. “Lecturers are told to send students creating a nuisance or disturbing a class to meet the principal and correspondent, who are specialised to deal with them,” he said.
