Bank cashier arrested for looting Rs 61L from ATM for two years

He would withdraw Rs 1 lakh every time. He did it for the past two-and-a-half years until he reached Rs 61 lakh, said the police.

Chennai: A cashier of a bank at Porur was arrested on Wednesday for looting Rs 61 lakh during depositing money at the ATM for the last 2 years.

The arrested identified as B Suresh (41) a resident of Rajagopal Street at Chintadripet was working as a cashier at Indian Bank for the last seven years.

"He had shifted to Porur three years ago and was designated to fill in cash at the bank ATM at Sri Ramachandra Medical College and hospital. The bank staff found the issue that the money is not tallying and questioned Suresh. He had initially managed to escape the management inquiry and from October 10 went into hiding," said a police officer.

On suspicion, the bank manager lodged a complaint with SRMC police on Saturday. Suresh was arrested on Wednesday from his residence. Preliminary inquiry revealed that he used to deposit cash in the ATMs and while going home used to open the machine with a duplicate key and take away some money.

The police recovered Rs 3,90,000 and 10 sovereigns of gold jewels from his possession. Suresh was arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
