Nedumbassery is hub of human trafficking: CBI

The CBI on Monday filed chargesheets with regard to two such cases at the special court here.

Kochi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) that probed alleged human trafficking aided by immigration officials at various airports in the state, has found that people from other states too were sent abroad via Nedumbassery airport without proper travel documents. The CBI on Monday filed chargesheets with regard to two such cases at the special court here. According to CBI officials, 12 people from Andra Pradesh traveled abroad without proper documents via Nedumbassery airport on January 19, 2011.

During probe, the agency found the racket had nexus with George John, a 51-year-old Armed Police Sub- Inspector who served at the immigration department on deputation in Thiruvananthapuram and Nedumbassery. It has also found alleged involvement of two other police officers including a woman police officer who was working on deputation at Nedumbasserry airport. As per the chargesheet, George John, a native of Kayamkulam, Armed Police Sub Inspector S. Binoy (38), and Woman Sub Inspector Anitha (52), a native of Muttada, Thiruvananthapuram, facilitated immigration of more than 20 persons abroad after receiving bribe from a travel agent named Livingston, a Thiruvananthapuram native.

In a separate case, the CBI found that a Civil Police officer (CPO) A P Ajeeb received Rs 9.39 lakh from travel agents- Niyas P.A. and C.H. Safeer of Mathilakam and A.S. Pareeth of Kottapadi. S. Samjith, armed police SI who was on deputation at Nedumabassery airport also has been chargesheeted by CBI in the case. According to CBI, the money was transferred to bank accounts of relatives of Ajeeb. The latter after withdrawing money from the account used to distribute it to officials with Immigration department for permitting persons travel without proper document.
