Bengaluru: Woman consumes poison at BDA headquarters
BENGALURU: Tension prevailed at the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) headquarters on Monday afternoon after a dejected woman allegedly consumed poison and attempted suicide over not receiving compensation for the land acquired by the BDA.
The woman, Mangala, a resident of Mahalakshmi Layout, carried the poison to the BDA headquarters and consumed it there after her repeated pleas to get the compensation promised by the BDA, who had acquired her land for the construction of an underpass on Outer Ring Road, fell on deaf ears. She was rushed to Santosh Hospital nearby and later shifted to Bowring Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
The police said that according to Mangala’s son, a land belonging to them in front of Rajkumar samadhi was acquired by the BDA for the construction of outer ring road in August 2013.
In March 2016, they were given award notice for an amount of Rs 4.4 crore. Despite submitting all the required documents to BDA officials, no compensation was cleared. Mangala decided to take the extreme step after several visits to the office and running from pillar to post for over seven months proved futile.
She consumed poison on Monday afternoon in Block A near the officer’s chamber. The land acquisition officer, Khanam, noticed Mangala falling unconscious and immediately raised an alarm and shifted her to the private hospital in Pulikeshinagar.
The police, who were informed, visited the spot and recovered a death note in which Mangala has accused BDA officers of their apathy and blamed them for her extreme step, the police said.
It is learnt that at the time of incident, former Minister Suresh Kumar too was at BDA. He took note of it and assured the affected family that he will help them get the compensation soon. Pulikeshinagar police are yet to take the statement of the victim.
