Chennai: Lorry runs over college girl cycling to railway station
Chennai: A 19-year-old college student was killed in a road accident after a lorry carrying sand rammed into her bicycle near Urapakkam on Monday morning.
Angered residents damaged at least seven lorries and they protested urging action against the lorry driver.
R. Sharon Kiruba (19), a resident of Athanur in Urapakkam, was studying BA economics second year in a private college in Guindy. Her father Ramesh is an employee at a private firm and mother Kanmani is a teacher in a private school. She has a younger sister too.
Her father told police that she used to ride her bicycle from her house to Urapakkam railway station daily and then travel to Guindy to the college by train.
“On Monday morning, Sharon was riding cycle to the Urapakkam railway station. At around 7.30am, when she was near the railway station, a sand-laden truck hit her bicycle from behind. The truck was taking a sharp turn towards the Trichy -Chennai highway. The truck ran over her and she died on the spot,” said an investigating officer. Sharon’s body was sent to the Chromepet government hospital for autopsy.
