Hyderabad: The Sultan Bazaar police has started an investigation into the baby swapping case after a complainant mother and her family alleged that doctors at Koti government maternity hospital deliberately did this.
Police would conduct DNA tests on the two newborns and their mothers to establish the babies’ identity. Cops have taken evidence from doctors and questioned some staff in this connection.
Tense situation prevailed in the hospital premises on Wednesday with relatives of Rajita, complain-ant mother, seeking justice and condemning the action of the hospital staff. Later, they lodged a complaint with the police. “We have started an investigation. A DNA test is the only way now to ascertain facts and establish the truth,” said East Zone DCP Ravinder.
The relatives of Rajita and her husband Shatru Babu insisted that the baby boy was theirs and that doctors were involved in child-swapping.
Doctors told the family members that they were making wrong allegations, and that the baby girl was born to Rajita and the baby boy to the other woman, Ramadevi. But, while calling out for Ramadevi, Rajita’s family came and took the baby boy away, and this led to a confusion, but the matter was immediately rectified, doctors told the parents.
A senior doctor said, “The family is not willing to listen. The newborns are required to be kept in the incubator and we have told the parents that a DNA test will be done to remove misunderstandings.”
Another doctor said, “The children are tagged and Rajitaâ s family has wrongly taken the child away. They are in no mood to reconcile to the situation now.”
