Assam DGP's intervention defuses escalating tension between Meiteis and Mizos

Guwahati: The pro-active approach of Assam Director General of Police G P Singh on Tuesday defused the escalating tension in Assam over a self-style advisory issued by ex-militant organisation of Mizoram to Meiteis followed by another by All Assam Manipuri Students' Union (AAMSU) to Mizos living in Assam.

After a large number of Meiteis started fleeing from Mizoram, following an advisory issued by an ex-militant organisation, the All Assam Manipuri Students' Union (AAMSU) issued a statement advising Mizos living in South Assam's Barak Valley districts to leave for their own safety - in a tit-for-tat move.

However, within hours the All Assam Manipuri Students' Union (AAMSU) clarified that their advisory was “misinterpreted”.

Assam DGP in his tweet shared a clarification issued by the Manipuri Student’s body in which the organization also withdrew its previous advisory. Mr Singh also called for reporting on the issue to be more circumspect and collective efforts to ensure peace.

The clarification of the students body stated, “As seen in some electronic media and Facebook pages the recent press statement of AAMSU is misinterpreted as quit notice to Mizos from Barak Valley. AAMSU only advises the Mizo Missionaries in Meitei village to take precautions for their own safety as the act of Mizoram government has caused anger upon Manipuris in Assam. So far the Mizo missionaries have been living within the Meiteis as families and we shall continue to stay in harmony forever.”

“In the interest of peaceful coexistence between the two communities the statement issued by AAMSU CC ref.No.: AAMSU-C/C/10/PN/07/23 dated on 24-07-23 has been withdrawn. AAMSU always stands for peace and harmony,” it further added.
