Dalit youth suicide: Vinayakan was tortured badly, reveals post-mortem report

Thrissur: Vinayakan, the dalit youth who committed suicide a day after he was released from custody at Pavartty police station last week, was tortured 24 hours before his death, as per the post-mortem report. Vinayakan from Engandiyur was picked up from the road by Pavaratty police on July 17 along with his friend and neighbour, Sarath, while he was speaking to his girlfriend. After the alleged police torture, Vinayakan was released the same day and was found hanging in his bedroom the next day.

Sarath had earlier said that Vinayakan was tortured in police custody and that the cops wanted the duo to admit that they were chain- snatchers. Sarath has been admitted to Thrissur Medical College and the investigation officers have not yet collected his statement and that of Vinayakan’s girlfriend. The post-mortem report shows three scalp contusions and abrasions on both the nipples of the youth.

There are six abrasions on the left side of the front chest and another abrasion on his little toe. Valappad CI C.R. Santhosh who is investigating the custodial torture said that he would submit the final report after collecting the statements of Vinayakan’s girlfriend and Sarath. Meanwhile, the district Congress leaders threatened to launch massive protests demanding action against the guilty policemen.
