SI suspended after youth dies by suicide

Prashant’s family members alleged that without registering any case, police beat both Prashant and Shravan for two days

Bhupalpally: Sub-inspector Gurram Uday Kiran of Ghanpuram mandal in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district has been suspended on charges of harassing a youth who committed suicide.

A dispute had occurred between two customers and owner of a bike showroom on issuing of a no objection certificate on April 10. The showroom owner complained to Ghanpuram police naming one Prashant and his friend Shravan for causing trouble at his showroom.

SI Uday Kiran then ordered constables to bring Prashant and Shravan to the police station. Prashant’s family members alleged that without registering any case, police beat both Prashant and Shravan for two days. Unable to bear the torture, Prashant tried to end his life in front of the police station by consuming pesticide on April 12.

Prashant died while undergoing treatment in a private hospital at Hanamkonda on Saturday.

Before his death, he gave a statement to police saying he took the extreme step because of harassment by SI Uday Kiran.

Following his death, Prashant’s family members protested in front of the police station demanding action against police officials responsible for the death. Following this, additional DGP of North Zone Nagi Reddy held an inquiry and suspended sub-inspector Uday Kiran.

Based on declaration given by Prashant at the time of his death, police have registered a case against the SI as also owner of the showroom, where the dispute started.
