Chennai: Woman charred to death, son arrested
Chennai: A 26-year-old man has been arrested by the Vandalur Otteri police for burning his mother to death in Vandalur on Wednesday morning.
Police identified the deceased as V.Shanthi( 43) a resident of Umanancheri in Vandalur living with her son Anantha Raj(26 ) and her mentally retarded brother Mani Kandan( 34).
Sources said the family, native of Coimbatore district, had moved to the city a year back after the demise of her husband. Anantha Raj works at a petrol bunk in Vandalur whereas Shanthi worked as a domestic maid.
According to the police, On Tuesday night at around 11 pm, when Anantha Raj returned home after work, he caught Shanthi and another man from the locality in a compromising position. Irked by his mother’s affair, he allegedly attacked the man. The man fled the spot after which he started attacking Shanthi.
Sources said, however, Shanthi managed to escape to her sister’s house in the same area.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday morning, the residents of the area spotted a half-burnt body of Shanthi near the bushes and alerted the police. The Vandalur Otteri police rushed to the spot and sent the remains to the Chromepet government hospital for post mortem. Police also rescued Manikandan from the spot who had sustained minor burn injuries, he was admitted to the Chromepet GH.
A case had been registered with the Vandalur Otteri police who arrested Anantha Raj on Wednesday evening. Police have also detained Shanthi’s sister Jeyanthi( 38) and her husband Ezhumazhai( 45). Furthur investigations are under progress.
