Hyderabad: Three members of a family were killed in a suicide attempt in Ranga Reddy district. Vijay Kumar, who is believed to have been troubled about his wife’s departure from his home due to financial troubles, poured kerosene over his mother and sister while they were sleeping and set them ablaze. Later, he set himself on fire and died while being taken to hospital.
Tandur police said Vijay, whose family hails from Gulbarga, married Manjula and they have an 18-month child. But the wife left him due to financial problems saying she would only return if Vijay was willing to leave his siblings. But Vijay did not relent and his wife threatened to charge him with dowry harassment. “A shocked Vijay then felt his family would be left homeless after his arrest,” Tandur ASP Chandana Deepthi said.
On Wednesday night, after dinner, while the family slept, Vijay brought out a can of fuel and set his family on fire. His younger brother, who had seen the flames, ran out and escaped. He also alerted his neightbours. Vijay died on his way to the hospital after setting himself on fire.
