VIJAYAWADA: Murder of a girl student by her lover led to a protest and demonstration in the streets at Narasaropet in Guntur district on Wednesday. The protesters demanded that the government do “justice” to the girl’s family by providing it with financial support.
According to the police, 18-year-old Kota Anusha from Gollapadu of Mupplla mandal was doing a degree course in a private college at Narasaraopet. Another student Vishnuwardhan Reddy belonging to Pamidipadu of Bollapalli Mandal and studying in the same college fell in love with her. They were close for some time but the girl distanced from him recently.
“Vishnuwardhan suspected Anusha was in love with another youth. He met her on Wednesday and took her to the outskirts of Ravipadu for a chat. During the conversation, he got angry and strangled Anusha. She died on the spot,” police said.
The accused surrendered at the Narasaraopet police station.
The police shifted the body to the Narasaraopet government hospital for autopsy. Later, the body was handed over to the parents who, with locals, rushed to Narasaraopet.
Angry people staged a protest march with the body from the government hospital to the Palnadu bus-stand. They squatted on the road with the body and demanded stern punishment to the accused and financial help to the girl’s family from the government. A group of students pelted stones at the college alleging negligence of the management in averting the incident. The students were backed by Telugu Desam leaders.
CPI state assistant secretary Muppalla Nageswara Rao, former TD MLA G.V. Aanjaneyulu and other leaders urged the police to register a case against the accused under the Nirbhaya Act and requested the government to announce an assistance of '1 crore to the girl’s family.
