Bengaluru: Ambulance siren spooks thieves, crash to death

They hit a hump and the rider lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a parked water tanker.

BENGALURU: Mistaking an ambulance siren to be that of a police vehicle, two robbers, who had waylaid a father-son duo near Bigbazar in Rajajinagar, sped on their motorcycle, only to hit a parked water tanker and die on the spot. There was another robber duo on another bike, who fled the spot. The police have recovered stolen mobile phones, daggers and knives from the two deceased, identified as Santhosh, 20 and Abhilash, 18, residents of Manjunathanagar in Shivannalli respectively.

According to the police, the accident happened near the ISKCON temple around 1 am on Wednesday. Iqlakh (22) and his father Yacoob, hailing from Gujarat, had come to the city from their hometown, and was heading towards Kurbarahalli where they were staying. The father-son duo was waylaid by the bike-borne duo (Santhosh and Abhilash) who robbed two phones and wallets.

Suddenly they heard a siren of an ambulance, but thought a police van was approaching. The two sped away on a bike. They hit a hump and the rider lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a parked water tanker, near the ISKCON temple and died on the spot, police said. According to Iqlakh and Yacoob, the other bike with the two robbers did not stop at the accident spot and sped away. Iqlakh was also assaulted by the robbers with a dagger and he sustained thigh injury, the police said.

Both Santhosh and Abhilash had cases registered against them at the Nandini Layout police station, the police added. A case of robbery was registered at the Subramanyanagar police station and the cops are now on the lookout for the other two absconding robbers. A case of accident was also registered at the Malleswaram traffic police station, who have seized the water tanker.
