Bengaluru: A Nepali couple on the run after committing robbery at a businessman’s house in HBR Layout was arrested by the Banaswadi police and valuables worth Rs 1 crore was recovered from them.

The accused, Bheem Bahadur Shahi (46), was a security guard at the house where he committed the robbery on December 8, along with his wife Meena Shahi (45).

The couple had gained entry to the bedroom of the house by breaking open the main door of the first floor. The house belongs to Nagaraj, a businessman, who along with his family had gone to visit a temple in Tamil Nadu. According to police, Bheem hatched the robbery plan upon learning that Nagaraj and his family members were leaving for Tamil Nadu on the night of December 7. At around 4 am on December 8, Bheem and his wife entered the house and decamped with diamond, gold jewellery and silver ornaments kept in a cupboard. The incident came to light on December 10 when Nagaraj’s son-in-law visited the house and found the main door on the first floor broken. He then informed the Banaswadi police.

The police who rushed to the spot found that Bheem was missing and they formed teams to nab him. They got credible information that Bheem and his wife were on their way to Nepal. Two police teams went to the India-Nepal border and camped there.

After a few days, the police caught the couple while trying to cross the border. Upon questioning, they revealed the names Dheeraj Shahi, Apil Shahi and Dheer Shahi, their associates in the robbery, who they said had already reached Nepal. A police team was rushed to Nepal to trace the other accused.
