Bashir killing planned in prison: Mangaluru police

This murder was allegedly in retaliation to the murder of Hindu activist Deepak Rao at Katipalla on the same afternoon.

Mangaluru: While investigating the murder of Ahmed Basheer, the city police have unearthed a shocking revelation that the conspiracy was hatched inside Mangaluru Prison!

Ahmed Bashir, a 47-year-old owner of a fast food joint was hacked to death on January 3 at Kottara Chowki. This murder was allegedly in retaliation to the murder of Hindu activist Deepak Rao at Katipalla on the same afternoon.

Police had arrested six people in connection with attack on Basheer, who revealed vital information related to the case during the enquiry. Based on this information the police have named three under trials and arrested another person in connection to the case. Kalladka Mithun (28), Rajesh alias Raju (21), Tilak Raj Shetty (28) - are already in prison in connection with another case (have been charged) and Anup (30) arrested in Basheer murder case. The four were allegedly identified with communal outfits and involved in various cases. During the interrogation of the six who were arrested earlier, police gathered information that within hours after Deepak’s murder, Anup went to the district prison. He met Mithun, Rajesh and Tilak there and the team planned to attack a person from the other community in retaliation, Police Commissioner T. R. Suresh told reporters. The accused zeroed Basheer, as they knew about him and his outlet at Kottara Chowki.

Anup took assailants to Bashir’s shop on January 3 night and brutally attacked him. Surprisingly the plan was executed within hours!Five days later on January 8, Mithun, Rajesh and Tilak were also accused of assaulting prison mates, after which Mithun was shifted to Bengaluru Central Jail, Rajesh to Belagavi and Tilak to Ballari. Mithun has seven cases of assault and attempt to murder at Bantwal. Rajesh has a murder case at Kankanady Town station and Tilak too is facing similar charges in the same station.

It may be recalled that Mithun was the accused in the attack on Mohammed Hashir at Kalladka in May 2017. It was this incident which took communal color and resulted in communal tension in Kalladka, Bantwal and other places.
