Coimbatore: A Nigerian national was detained at the Coimbatore International Airport on Friday with Rs 53.78 lakhs in new currency and Rs 4.9 lakh in scrapped notes on Friday.
Tochukwo Chijiko had flown down to Coimbatore on a private airline from Delhi. He had been found with the cash in Delhi, but was allowed to fly down to Coimbatore, where Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sleuths (DRI) secured him on his landing at the airport.
Chijiko informed the Income Tax department sleuths that the money was meant to buy textiles from neighbouring Tirupur district to do business in his country.
However, the Income-Tax department is probing further to know the source of money and how he got such a huge amount in new currencies.
