Karnataka: Man murders daughter, honour killing suspected

The incident took place in Thyamagondlu police station limits near Nelamangala on October 22, but came to light only on Wednesday.

Bengaluru: In a suspected case of honour killing, a 15-year-old girl was murdered by her father and later burnt in the backyard of the house. The incident took place in Thyamagondlu police station limits near Nelamangala on October 22, but came to light only on Wednesday. The deceased is Lakshmidevi, was a Class 10 student at a government school. Her father, Chikkanarasimhaiah, 41, a farmer and carpenter, has been arrested. He has two wives and Lakshmidevi was the daughter from his first marriage. He lives with his second wife, Parvathi.

Police say Lakshmidevi eloped with Lakshminarayana (Gunda), who is of a different caste, three months ago. Her parents informed police, which upset Chikkanarasimhaiah. She returned a few days later and her father remained angry. Villagers grew suspicious when they didn’t see her for almost a month. “When head constable Erabhovi went to the spot, villagers said they suspected Chikkanarasimhaiah had killed his daughter,” an official said.

Erabhovi informed his superiors who rushed to the spot. Chikkanarasimhaiah was picked up for questioning and he confessed to bludgeoning his daughter to death. He said that he had burnt her in the backyard of his house on October 22, the official added. “He claims Lakshmidevi wasn’t going to school regularly and had also not paid the fees after collecting money from him. However, it is suspected that it’s a case of honour killing and we are investigating it,” the official added. IGP (Central Range), Amrit Paul, Bengaluru Rural SP Amit Singh and other senior officers visited the spot on Thursday.
